19 & 21 The Green North

This pair of cottages were listed Grade II on 4th April 1978   

Described bywww.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk  as two houses, formerly one. C17, possibly earlier. Coursed clunch rubble, timber framing and some rendering. Thatch roof with brick ridge stack. 4-unit plan. One storey plus attics. Irregular 4-window front has 2 plank doors and 4 leaded 2-light casements, one combined with the left door: 4 small dormers, one leaded. Wall has various breaks and straight joints and may be partly timber framed. Stack rises above party wall. Small C20 extension, to right, returns around rear. Left gable wall is timber framed. Interiors not inspected but likely to be of interest.

Lena Saunders, a school teacher at the village school was living in No 19 in 1901 with her parents and continued to live there until her death in 1975.  At the time of the 1939 register her sister Lucy is living in No 21

The properties were listed in the sale by auction of the Bousfield estate and were sold in 1946 on the instruction of Miss Edith Bousfield by Messrs Nicholas at the Lamb Hotel, Wallingford

These two cottages were Lot 4 and sold at auction for £4060
