Warborough & Shillingford Conservation Areas
The Warborough Conservation area includes the length of the village from Upper Farm at the north end and down Thame Road to Gravel Lane and includes the area around the Green and the Allotments. The Shillingford area is Wharf Road.
In 1998 South Oxfordshire District Council published
‘Warborough Conservation Area a character study’
The 1990 Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act placed a duty on every local planning authority to determine which parts of their area are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which is desirable to preserve or enhance. The act also states that the local planning authority should, from time to time, formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of these conservation areas.
The document is an appraisal of the Warborough conservation area to give an overview of the established character to be preserved and to identify possible areas for future enhancements. It is intended to assist in defining what is of special architectural or historic importance, what should be protected and to give guidance as to the form, style and location of future change and development.
It also highlighted buildings that were not listed but considered to be of local interest which include St Laurence Hall, the Greet Hall, The Pavilion and others.
It also sets out the local authority’s plan regarding planning applications, the use of materials (for example UPVC will not be permitted for the doors and windows of listed building) thatching styles and more.
Existing walls, buildings, trees and hedges and open spaces are retained where they contribute to the character of the vehicle. Permission is required to carry out work on trees in the area and this includes private properties.
