History of the War Memorial
The War Memorial is situated on the A329 Thame Road at the entrance to The Green South and was erected around 1920.
The Memorial was originally built with no surround but soon four granite pillars were built at each corner and railings fixed between them.
In 1925 a steam driven lorry managed to destroy one pillar and part of the railings. The haulage company involved was charged 10/- (ten shillings) for the cost of repairs.
Extracts of Minutes of Meeting on 19th December 1927 states:-
Ex Service Men’s Club and War Memorial – in a letter from Arthur Davis, late Hon Sec, dated 9 December 1927, he records that at a General Meeting convened on November 21 “it was resolved to dissolve the above club and it was further unanimously agreed, on the motion of the Chairman, the Revd. A Caldicott that the Warborough Parish Council should be asked to accept the balance of the Club Fund standing at Lloyds Bank, Wallingford and to invest the same in a Trust the interest of which to be used for the upkeep of the Memorial to the memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War and for the purchase of a wreath to be put on the Warborough Memorial each Armistice Day”
After the Second World War the railings fell into disrepair and were removed.
The Land, owned by the Parish Council, is included in Land Registry Caution – ON206080 dated 15th July 1998 lodged under Section 53 of the Land Registration Act 1925.
This Caution was superseded by ON339579 when the caution was transferred to the Greet Hall Address in March 2018.
For the Centenary of Armistice Day World War I in November 2018, a number of villagers felt that it would be an appropriate time to replace the railings, the cost was covered by donations from residents. At the same time the Parish Council refurbished the lettering on the memorial itself. Year 12 Design and Technology students from Wallingford School were invited to be part of the project to give an interpretation of war through the eyes of a younger generation.
The railings were crafted at J.R.R. Hills of Henley by Stephen Long, a former pupil of St Laurence School and resident of the village.
We believe that the resulting design is modern, interesting and visually pleasing. There are 31 poppies, one for each life sacrificed in WWI.
With thanks to Martin Drury for supplying some of the grave photos from Northern France whilst on a charity cycle ride in 2023
